Coleman Picked 2nd, Toliver 3rd at the 2009 WNBA Draft

For those watching the WNBA Draft yesterday, it was essentially over 15 minutes into it as Marissa and Kristi were chosen with the second and third picks. Marissa gets to stay home in D.C. and play with Crystal, while KT will play in the city that her idol Michael Jordan made famous - Chicago.

Marissa and KT are the second highest teammates to be picked as Sue Bird and Swin Cash went 1 and 2 in 2002.

On Monday, I will give my thoughts on the season that passed and the future of the team. If you have any questions post them in the comments and I will try to answer them. I will apologize to terps25 in advance as I don't know how nice I will be, but I will try.

Questions & comments...
1) Can the blogosphere get off of Brenda's n-ts and stop claiming Walz was the brains (there's little evidence to support this since the team hasn't sunk into oblivion post-Walz - Walz got lucky this year as KT killed us leaving Burke open (that's who beat us when we played Louisville));
2) Any ahance we hire Stephanie Glance (given her ties to Yow) as an assistant?;
3) Which Marah Strickland will come to play in 10-11?;
4) Will Barrett or Taylor be the starting PG?
5) Will Kizer get better hands in the paint & how do you see Yemi (who I personally really like) & the new young lady, Essence Townsend, helping us defensively in the interior?

I guess that's it....I'm really excited about next season and also nervous. I've felt like we've suddenly been getting these huge posts b/c Brenda (or someone) wants to shift our interior play a bit, perhaps adding a bit more to our defensive play down there. Interested in hearing what you have to say, even if it's not "nice" - thanks Joey!

Comments on Mingo leaving & the rumors floating around about EDD?

Just found this blog few weeks ago. Really enjoying it. I am MD alumni, class of 81. The 1st MD womens basketball game I watched was the National Championship they won. I was actually just surfing channels and found the game by chance. I live in FL so I had no idea they made it that far. Became a huge fan watching them beat Duke. Been following them ever since. Here are some of my thoughts on the team.
1) Its really been fun watching Shay, Harp, Lang, KT and Marissa these last 4 years. magical players.
2) I was so disapointed in the Louisville game. I felt Marissa tried to do too much when double teamed and should have concentrated on finding the open player instead of trying to fight thru the double team. Where was the defence? I really liked the press Louisville used on MD. Brenda needs to play more players and do a semi court press. Brenda depended too much on her seniors and starters and I think thats why they never pressed, she wants to keep the starters fresh for offence and not wear them out on defence.
3)Concerned about next years team. Liles will be the senior so its her team. hopefully she will rise to the occasion. Unless the incoming Freshman really impress, I predict 3rd place ACC.
4) Whats going behind the scenes? Kat Lyons left, Gatewood quit down the stretch, Drey is leaving.

Great blog, keep it up
Peace
Ed

Whats up with Under the Shell web site? I thought they were going to make all episodes availible. Right now you cant watch any episode from season 1-3. You can only watch episodes from season 4 5.

Hey Joey. I think you have me confused with "xwomynjoc" as far as being "nice," but thanks for the shout out anyway. LOL Personally, I like your observations and usually find myself agreeing more times than not. Congrats to Marissa and Kristi. I'm looking forward to following them this summer.

Where did Kat Lyons transfer to? I honestly didn't notice until halfway through the season that she wasn't around..and what's this about Drey Mingo leaving? Where will she transfer to?

I'm with Ed in Tampa. How can I watch the 1st 3 seasons of UTS?

1 If Dara Taylor is the next KT Who is the next Marissa - Who's playing wing in 09/10?

2. Drey transferring doesn't surprise me too much - she wasn't going to get off the bench so if she wants to play she needed to go elsewhere. Now rumors are re-surfacing that Marah has requested a release also - I don't get that one.

3. Will Barrett start at PG? I really was impressed with her this year. Do you think she will get displaced once DT is up to speeed?

I am VERY concerned alum regarding the rumors circulating that the Terps are about to lose 2 additional players (in addition to Mingo)....WTH is going on? And if this happens, is it time to begin looking more carefully at the coaching staff?

Anonymous said...

What are the rumors about EDD? Is done playing Volleyball and is she interested in the TERPS? I have not heard any lately. Why does Stricklin want to leave now? She certainly would be a starter next year?

Geez, Maryland wastes no time..Mingo's already off of the website's roster. I bet she ends up at Georgia or Georgia Tech.

As far as Marah goes, I'm not all that shocked about rumors of her asking for a release. I've been hearing that one since the beginning of this calendar year supposedly because of personal things going on with her family. If it's true, I wish her the best wherever she ends up.

Please tell me that these rumors about Kizer aren't true....if we lose her, we are UP a creek. Absolutely. We would then be dependent on Essence Townsend, Dee (who I love), Tianna Hawkins & Yemi. Oh boy. Plus I love Kizer...I want her to stay and deliver the next championship.

Hi Joey and terps25, I said nothing about being "nice" I said "less negative". I don't mind calling the team out for areas that "need improvement" and I believe you have done a great job of that this season. Just changing a few words in a heading does wanders for my forever optomistic mind. Once again, thanks for the great coverage of Terps Women's basketball.

Kat Lyons transferred to Marist then was thrown out and currently is suing them.

Just found this link about the Kat Lyons situation.
http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20090316/NEWS05/90316029

Reading between the lines, Player depressed, admits breakup with teammate, catholic school, they kick her out.

Its probabbly a very touchy subject but what factor does lesbianism play in Womens basketball? It must be a factor on some teams. I never really thought about it till I read the above article. Now I wonder with some players switching programs, maybe this is a factor. Of course I take the Seinfeld approach "I am not gay, not that there is anything wrong with it"

Had another question. While watching Duke this year, noticed the coach for Duke was different from the one we beat in the Nat Champ game. She never won the big game but had a great amount of sucess at Duke. Why Leave for what I believe is a lesser program?

Andrea said...

After I posted the question about Kat, I found that article but thanks anyway. I don't blame her for suing them. I'm not surprised Marist kicked her out though being a catholic school and all. I feel bad for her though.

Why in the world would Kizer want to leave? Maybe her gripe is that she could've been used more as an offense weapon this year..if that's what it is, I'm with her on that one. Even if that's the case, doesn't make sense that she'd want to leave when she's bound to be a big part of the offense and get her fair share of touches next season.

I always wondered too why Gail Goestenkors would leave Duke for Texas. If the money is anything like it is in Men's CBB, it might have been because Texas offered her a lot of money but I doubt it. Maybe it was the way Duke lost in the tourney in '07...or maybe she felt like as long as she was at Duke she'd always be known as the winningest coach with no titles...

There's some poster on the ESPN WCBB boards who claims to know Marah (and is skeptical about all of these rumors) - he claims to have messaged her this evening, but hasn't posted her response, if any.

The Kizer thing seems weird and I hope it's not true...we REALLY REALLY NEED HER. And I really like her as a player (also she seems like a nice young lady, to boot).

As to the press, the head coach of Maryland's men's team runs an outstanding press....I'd think that Brenda & Gary could discuss how she could incorporate his press into her strategy & that he could teach them how to run it (of course, this idea depends on their having enough of a relationship for this to happen). But it'd be nice to think that he could help her....

any truth in the rumor that mingo is talking the walz to louisville?

Anonymous said...

Let's hope Mingo isn't going there (or Strickland) - I'd hope Coach B would prevent anyone from going to play for that classless jerk.

Please notice the distinctions between the 2 announcements (perhaps it's the way my mind has been trained but there are some interesting differences).

Should make for an interesting time at the banquet on the 26th. Wasn't planning to go at first - now I might go to get the skinny.

Also Marah and Drey are roommates.

xwomynjoc said...

Texas offered Gail G. a big contract and Duke wasn't willing to match it.

xwomynjoc said...

Drey has her eyes on Purdue. She's almost 100% sure that's where she's heading. She wants to visit first but, it's the only place she's looking at.
